The league has not responded to this incident with any disciplinary action because there should not be any disciplinary action taken. It is a sport, it was a ball where two players did exactly what they were supposed to do. Go play poker if you don't want broken bones.
The highlight film shows that the Wambach-Shaner collision occurred like this:
1. Wambach split two defenders in the box, kicked the ball beyond them, and accelerated.
2. Shaner ran up to kick the ball.
3. As Shaner approached the ball -- which she would clearly reach before Wambach -- Wambach launched a flying slide tackle , swinging her right leg at the ball and Shaner's leg.
4. Shaner kicked the ball. The ball deflected off of Wambach as she hurtled toward Shaner.
5. Wambach, in the air, collided with Shaner, whose leg was planted. Wambach kicked her shin into Shaner's shin.
In my mind, Wambach was at fault. This was a dangerous tackle. The injury was not an unlikely outcome. Shaner made a routine play. Wambach made an over-aggressive play.
To me, the incident is reminiscent of Wambach's collision with Daniela. Wambach was playing dangerously then as well.
I don't know why this is happening this season. Does Wambach feel more pressure to carry the team? Is she more frustrated? I don't know, but I am very concerned.
That said: I don't agree Wambach doesn't care. As Hope Solo said, Wambach has a big heart. I am certain she's mortified that Shaner and Daniela are injured.
Also: I've watched Wambach play for years. She is not just big and fast. She is extremely talented. You don't score like she has -- not just often, but in crucial games -- without talent.
Finally: the tone of some posters criticizing Wambach in this thread is over the line. I agree with some of what you are saying, but not with the way you are saying it.
eff this seriously abby didnt get disciplinary what soever!? its the end of the week
like she should get something for being involved with another season ending injury.
dont forget we see the wps edited highlights here not the full game ..so we see what wps want us to see......we show our games worldwide...we have to make do with edited stuff coming in..unless the webcasts are allowed to be sent out from usa which the last couple of games have been denied to overseas broadcast ..and all we see for 90mins is ads for a estate agent..if she is so innocent why do I keep reading about all these incidents..and I do look back at when she took Faye White out...an accident..ok if thats what you see..cameras dont lie..or does a bloodied nose...Im not taking a vendetta against Abby BUT she has talent in her feet then use that talent...dont blacken your book with these other allegations otherwise whats the point of playing FOOTBALL...If the WPS has decided to let it go fair enough but lets keep the game as it was intended..not a battle field otherwise Im sticking to thegames over here..played with pride passion and no money carrott being waved about..I love the ladies game i love football and I dont want to see the game go backwards to how it was when I was younger..yes im 53 and still passionate about the game and recently championing the Ladies game which I have grown to love watching..driving to games away from home when I can..obscure corners of UK to watch, in our case in the uk with a few hundred others..but I love it....i have now climbed off my soap box..chapter closed...
Worth noting that it's the end of the week, and there's been no report from either the WPS Disciplinary Committee or the Commissioner. So they appear to be going along with the referee's decision that this was just an unfortunate incident.
no she got up and the look said thats what they want to see..ive got a reputation and i am going to use it
I was sitting on the field and this whole incident happened about 40 ft away from me. I agree with StarCityFan that Abby was visiblly upset the whole time the medics were working on Shaner. Not once did I see a look on her face that suggested she was thinking what you state above.
whichever leg she leads with or not ..her whole mannerism her body shape her actions her body language are of someone who now believes all the stuff writtem about her...in her own mind she has become this aggresive player who it seems knows only one way to play..or not play as she likes to show..good to see her concern for the player with the broken leg..no she got up and the look said thats what they want to see..ive got a reputation and i am going to use it..sorry abby the game is much bigger than you are....
