Women's Professional Soccer

Who wants to read a newspaper article???

So today I go looking through the sports section of my newspaper (like I do whenever I remember to) to see if it had anything about WPS... Sure enough it did! I was shaking with excitement when I saw the picture of Aly Wagner & Leslie Osborne...but then I read the title & instead I started to shiver...Success still elusive goal???

So I read through it & it starts off OK but halfway through the article it starts to get negative! No offense to the author or anything (seriously...nothing against...you got an article about WPS published in the paper) but do people REALLY have to doubt the power of WPS... I mean seriously the only difference between men's & women's soccer is the long hair (which isnt really a difference cause guys still wear their hair in ponytails haha)I really dont see a difference in the style of play (especially in the US)

There's some what of a prediction in the article that the WPS will end up just like WUSA...except I dont think people have seen the incredibly hard work that the poeple behind the league has done...& not to mention this awesome FAN BASE! I mean have they seen this website? This place is filled with poeple who log in everyday for the similar interest of soccer no matter who's playing it!

So if anyone wants to read the article here ya go:

Really dislike doom-and-gloom pundits who are just waiting to hammer the last nail in the proverbial coffin and say "I told you so!!!". Personally I've been dealing with these idiots since I moved to the US... In 94 right after the world cup... writers were saying that soccer (in any form ) would NEVER catch on in America....After 1996 the same morons were saying MLS would fail.....Now its WPS turn to hear the BS from hack writers.
Choosing to ignore these idiots doesnt help...I consider it a fight... do everything you can to counter the negativity these writers spread...start your own blog, write to the newspapers everychance you get, start a podcast, public access tv...do anything and everything you can to spread the word....

There will always be naysayers. It's the faith of the true believers that makes things happen. You should have read the press when they announced they were going to play the '99 WWC in football stadiums.

Ya when I read that I was a little sad. But hopefully WPS will be able to bounce back a little with their new approach financially. When Abby broke her leg, it was on the internet, even though that was almost a whole year ago. It really is a great league, and people will hopefully eventually notice it. It gives little girls a place to go to when they get older if they don't happen to play for the national team, GO WPS!!!!!

I feel like people (the ones who aren't wps fans already) are actually starting to notice that there is an entire league for womens soccer. Also, if they're making it onto wii news, that means multiple writers/news casters are taking an interest about reporting on WPS. May the on going battle to be heard continue with womens sports.

ohh hey yeaa i saw that about osbourne and whitehill on my wii news. i was actually suprised. you really dont see much of women's soccer (WPS especially) on wii news. last time i saw something about the WPS onthe wii was when daniela was taken out by abby.

I agree with both comments & after reading the NY Times & USA Today articles I'm happy to see that WPS is getting noticed. I think that overtime WPS will get more attention from soccer fans!

I thought it was rather a negative article too, but it was on the first page of the Sports section of the Times and that's a plus. The teams are getting noticed. We'll just have to ask the sports writers and editors for more stories.

San Diego article

New York Times: Women’s Soccer Builds a League From the Ground Up (Registration required but free)

USA Today: From Mia to Marta: Brazilian superstar captures 1999 magic

The big difference between men's soccer and women's soccer is that a lot more people support the former than the latter. The Freedom have an average attendance of around 5,000, while DC United gets 3-4 times that. And most of United's matches are televised, with all the revenue that implies, while only a handful of the Freedom's games are televised, and those on an obscure sports channel.

WPS, unfortunately, has a struggle for survival ahead of it, but at least they know what they need to do and are doing it, which you couldn't say about the WUSA.
