Women's Professional Soccer

At this point in time, I really don't think there's much I can say that we don't already know. Red Stars fans are mystified that our Brazilian superstar isn't starting. We're mystified that we have the least attack oriented formation ever. We're mystified that Chioma Igwe is still starting. We're...well, we're mystified about a lot of things.

So, in terms of technicalities, I voice the sentiments (with a few minor exceptions) of this blog.

We're thoroughly disheartened, but historically, true Chicago sports fans never give up on their teams, despite the good and the bad. Every time something goes wrong, I think of the magic of the season opener in St. Louis. It was truly a fantastic experience, one of the best soccer viewing experiences of my life. I know the magic is still there for the Red Stars. It'll happen. The best thing that we can do, as fans, is to show up and let our girls know that we are behind them 100%. We know they have it in them.

So join us in Local 134 on Wednesday night, July 1 at 7:30. We'll be the loud people with the drums hoping like hell that we beat Washington.

P.S. -- Kudos to Athletica for beating SBFC this weekend. Keep on keepin' on. I need you crawl up those standings so I can get me to a play off game...ideally a championship.

I agree that Tarp is a little to timid to play that captain role in the middle, and that there needs to be a little more aggression with the coaching staff but I absolutely disagree about CARLI LLOYD. I think she is an amazing player, and even though everyone still hasn't found their groove yet with this team (it still is pretty early), I think she has SOOO much to offer the team with her ball control skills and her amazing shot. Once they all find their niche i think they will definately be a team that everyone else should fear.

We have one good win under our belt now let's see where that can take us...

This whole situation makes me feel like I'm in high school again. My freshman year for try-outs they stuck all the girls in the gym and put half the girls on one side and half on the other with pinnies. They threw a ball out there and said "play". The way you were judged on that day followed you for the next four years. No lie.

snipoppers16, I couldn't agree with you more. There is no one else to blame but Emma concerning this fiasco. This is her team. She picked it to play "her style"(whatever that means). And that posession style and attacking style that was talked about at the beginning of the season is a joke. There is no posession, cause we get desposessed of the ball real quickly and attacking, what attacking? We haven't scored in over 400 minutes.
I also agree with you on her pre-conceptions of players. She cut, didn't draft, or didn't give a chance to several players that could help this team out. As much as I actually like Rapinoe. The choice to pass up Chicago native Brittany Bock may backfire. IMO, she has her favorites that she coddles and stays with too long.
And right now the staff, the staff is making knee jerk decisions and off the cuff reactions.
I'll give her till tomorrow's game against the Freedom to prove she can still coach this team to a victory. I am a Chicago type of fan. I will not abandon my team. But if we have another poor showing tomorrow, then the drum beat will get louder.

Sorry, I'm used to being able to read a preview before I post my blogs, so I'm going to add.

Overall, I think our problems are the result of poor leadership. Our captain is too timid to play her position properly, let alone to set a proper tone. (Tarpley started the season as a center mid. Instead of running it like she was expected, she was too reluctant and timid. She was ineffectual and Hayes put her as a forward where she has continued to be ineffectual unless she is offsides.) Our coach is missing some big things obvious to everyone but her and has the patience of a rock waiting for it to rain. That's a really poor metaphor, but I can't think of anyone with as much patience as she does. You can only tell yourselves to have faith for so long before you start to recognize that there are some problems that need addressing.

All in all, we haven't looked to trade. We haven't experimented with our bench, except when the national team call-ups forced it (and look. Girls who never played suddenly earned the right to start! Shock!). We haven't changed our formation to something more offensively aggressive.

Basically, we haven't done jack. We haven't won jack. Hmm...

It's true that no formation will win a game, but only having one striker up top certainly isn't going to help get the ball in the back of the net.

I disagree. I think Carli Lloyd is a waste of a roster space, both on Red Stars and with the National Team. Admittedly I haven't seen her play that much outside of the Red Stars because I stopped caring about the US WNT about 4 years ago for a multitude of reasons.

Also, our defense has been in shambles since game one. Athletica got past us and had so many opportunities. With the difficulty we had getting upfield and the chances they had, we could have easily lost 4-0. Our keeper kept us in it, but I had a feeling that our luck wouldn't last and some changes needed to be made. They weren't and now look where we are.

I don't think there are problems within the squad. They don't look happy because they're professional athletes who haven't won a game in 2 months. You'd be unhappy, too. Oh, wait... We're all unhappy.

Honestly? I think that Cristiane isn't starting because she's probably still hurting a bit from her injury. Instead of playing her to start, Emma is keeping her for a late jolt. This is a horrible tactic considering the trend she herself point out, that not a single team in WPS has come back from being behind in a game this season.

I think that Emma has too many pre-conceptions about players and instead of looking at the reality of the situation she let's reputations or brief moments of brilliance cloud her decision making. She told Tiffeny Milbrett to not even bother when Milbrett called her about the open try-outs last winter. Milbrett has been the heart and soul of FC Gold Pride's attack. (I swear every offensive event on the matchtracker involves her somehow.) That really sends up a flag for me because why dismiss one of the world's best goal scorers due to age before seeing for yourself what she can still do?

Theres no formation that will win a game for you, its all the players commited to a formation that wins games. they are getting their opps to score. Alot of there chances are being cleared off the goal line, thats football you need a lil luck. things offensively arent going there way but chances are being created.

their defense is in shambles. their centerbacks are awful, what happened to dieke and Dalmy.

You can sense theres some inner squad troubles within the team. they arent getting along with each other, and you can tell by the way they play. Carli llyod is way to good of a player to be playing the way she is. Those girls just dont look happy. They have all the talent they need to be the best, but it comes down to the fact that they dont look happy.

Cristiane isnt starting, when a really good player isnt starting you have to look at discipline problems. Maybe she is not getting along with the team or coach. Sometimes coaches bench top players to punish them for off the field issues. I think enternal issues are killing the REd STars.

In all fairness, I'm getting really aggravated whenever someone says that Emma is the only female head coach in the league like I've been reading this past week. It's like they missed the press release where Kelly Lindsey was named head coach of SBFC. Although, this has more to do with the San Jose CyberRays blanket on my bed than anything else. ;)
