Some things never fully hit you until the moment actually arrives. Today the moment arrived and I realized that I am trying out for a professional soccer team. And not just any soccer team, but the Boston Breakers. I’ve grown up in Massachusetts, I attended Boston College and now I am having the opportunity to play professionally in Boston, the greatest city.

As I entered Harvard’s hockey rink to register, I saw many people waiting around. It was pretty cool to see how many people showed up to tryout; people from across the U.S., and from various colleges all united today to tryout and fulfill a dream. Now, when a dream like this is on the line, people are bound to be nervous. Breakers Assistant Coach Lisa Cole and General Manager Joe Cummings addressed the 60 or so anxiously awaiting women and told us to relax, enjoy ourselves and go out there and do what we do best.

There were two sessions today. In the morning we played 8 v. 8 and in the afternoon we played 5 v. 5. The morning went well and I think people were able to get their nerves out and settle in after the first 15 minutes. It felt great to be out there competing and playing.
After the first session, we had about an hour and a half to relax and then the second session began. We were grouped into teams and we quickly introduced ourselves to one another and then began to play. It’s always different playing with new people. You don’t know their tendencies, or you may have to play out of position, but all in all, we came together and completed day one.

Tomorrow we are playing 11 v. 11, so I am very excited. Nothing beats playing a full field scrimmage. Nothing compares to the aggressiveness, competitiveness and passion that a game brings out.

You saw the happiness and excitement, as well as the tiredness and relief on everyone’s faces at the end of today. Day one is over and one more day remains. One more day remains to improve upon your performance. One more day remains to walk into Harvard tomorrow and play the game you love. One more day remains to prove yourself.
