(October 29, 2008) - FIFA announced its short list for the FIFA World Player of the Year Awards on Wednesday and eight of the 10 players listed are WPS draftees, highlighting the mission of WPS to attract the world’s best soccer players to play professionally in the United States.
Selection in a WPS draft means that a player’s rights within the league have been assigned to a specific team. That team then needs to negotiate and sign the player before they officially join a team’s roster for the 2009 WPS Season.
The eight players drafted by WPS teams who were nominated for the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award are:
Player Team How WPS Rights Were Acquired
Shannon Boxx (USA) Los Angeles Sol U.S. Women's National Team Allocation
Cristiane (Brazil) Chicago Red Stars WPS International Draft
Daniela (Brazil) St. Louis WPS International Draft
Marta (Brazil) Los Angeles Sol WPS International Draft
Christine Sinclair (Canada) Bay Area WPS International Draft
Kelly Smith (England) Boston Breakers WPS International Draft
Hope Solo (USA) St. Louis U.S. Women's National Team Allocation
Ingvild Stensland (Norway) St. Louis Post-Draft Discovery Player
The list of 10 female candidates for the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year Award was drawn up by soccer experts from the Committee for Women's Football and the FIFA Women's World Cup. The final award will be given at the 18th FIFA World Player Gala at the Zurich Opera House on January 12th, 2009.
