JR Salazar Elizabeth Lambert: the original hard-woman of women's soccer?

Personally, it takes guts to be somebody you're not, or somebody you want to be. I like Elizabeth Lambert of the New Mexico Lobos women's soccer team for her courage to break the mold, albeit for the wrong reasons. You talk about someone who just knows how to throw someone down, punch in the back, and defend with a flying kick in spite of giving up a goal to a bunch of pure-hearted Mormons from BYU. Sure it's taboo, and you will be obligated to apologize to save face, but the way she played foo… Continue

Coach Gray How to Defeat Chicago Red Stars

Like my post on "How to Defeat Washington", this post hinges on the weaknesses written in, "Why Chicago Failed to Win", not being corrected. I have yet to see New York Sky Blue FC play so I will not be able juxtapose my opinion of Chicago's play with their's. WHAT NEW YORK MUST DO TO WIN: 1) Win the midfield. The Chicago midfield is its weakest link. Unfortunately, (I say unfortunately because, this post notwithstanding, I am a Chicago fan) the Red Star midfield is like a vacant, uncontested… Continue

snipoppers16 Great First Weekend

I can't even begin to express how thrilled I am that the season is FINALLY here. It's been a long 5 and a half years waiting for the return of women's professional soccer in this country. I love that unlike the WUSA, where the closest team to me was about 8 hours away, I have 2 teams within a reasonable driving distance. I've already been to as many WPS games as WUSA games! (A grand total of...one. lol) There were many things I truly loved about the WUSA. First of all, it was a big part of my "… Continue

Pat McNamara Time to step it up folks...

I am sure no one is sleeping in New York tonight. Eventhough there has been stress and angst for sometime now, I am sure the hardworking folks from the WPS league office and every WPS franchise are taking some well deserved time tonight to enjoy themselves. Some have been waiting for tomorrow for three months, some have been waiting for three years. Not many people have been able to say they have been part of the creation of a new professional sports league, let along one considered the highest… Continue

Leslie Osborne Watch out Kiwis

It was so fun to see the girls come out the way they did against in their last game against Japan! You could tell they had confidence, determination and smile on their faces. The girls are pumped and very relieved that they got the victory over Japan. Having a coach that believes in you and stay positive through challenging times can really make the difference. I thought that from the moment the game starte… Continue

peter wilt And the Football Ferns Are Next

Tuesday's match against New Zealand is a rematch of a game played at Chicago's Soldier Field exactly one year earlier. On August 12, 2007, more than 7,000 fans witnessed Abby Wambach score two goals to lead the US to a… Continue

Cat Whitehill The way we know how to play

Go USA!! I am so excited to sit here and write to you about how happy I was to watch my team beat Japan, 1-0, and put ourselves in a great position to advance. It was a much better overall performance from USA, so I am glad that the first game with all the nerves is over and we were able to really move forward. I just loved watching us create so many chances and in so many different ways. This is the way we kno… Continue

Thomas Hofstetter Big hurray to NJ youth soccer development

In case you haven’t seen the US vs. Norway game, I wanted to point out that in the second half of the game, the US lineup had FOUR girls from New Jersey on the field (Christie Rampone, Carli Lloyd, Heather O’Reilly and Tobin Heath). It was especially great to see Tobin, who is one of the youngsters and who played for Sky Blue in our inaugural season last year. We shouldn’t take it for granted to see four NJ girls in the lineup. I think this is evidence of the long and hard work of our youth prog… Continue
