With 5 weeks of play behind us, WPS wants to know who you believe will step it up this month -- Will LA Sol stay atop the leaderboard, or will the flood gates finally open for Saint Louis Athletica?

St. Louis was looking good yesterday until Daniela got injured. I don't expect them to make the playoffs without her.

If it's anything like the WUSA, the final standings will be very different from what we're seeing now.

Sol - probably not as good as their current record.
Breakers - formidable with Kelly Smith at home on their artificial turf, not so strong otherwise.
Red Stars - have a good feeling about them, think they'll contend at the end.
FC Gold Pride - deep up front but only starting one experienced defender, will probably cost them as the season goes on.
Freedom - becoming scarily good at finding ways to score, will contend if Erin McLeod (and their defense) ever shows up.
Athletica - losing Daniela (as seems likely) is going to hurt, will do better than they have so far but not a lot.
Sky Blue - they have Kai and O'Reilly but only one goal? They've got to be better than that but still not a contender.

Specifically in May:
Sol (3 games, all at home) - will go 2-0-1 but will have to go on the road later and slip as a result.
Breakers (1H, 2 away) - 1-1-1. Lose to Sol, beat Freedom, draw Sky Blue.
Red Stars (3H) - 3-0-0. Will take over league lead with four-game winning streak but will slump in June due to tough road matches.
FC Gold Pride (1H, 2A) - 0-2-1. Will slip in short-term.
Freedom (2H, 1A) - 2-1-0. Will lose in Boston but win both home matches.
Athletica (1H, 2A) - 1-2-0. Will get first win next weekend.
Sky Blue (3A) - 0-3-1. Tough road series keeps them in the cellar, ends with draw at home.

I agree, St. Louis will get it's first win.
The Breakers go to the top, because Kelly will keep dominating.
Sol drops to second.
Sky Blue will stay last in the standings because they will not win against the Red Stars, SOL, or Breakers in the month of May, could draw the Freedom and get a point, but that won't help.

Breakers win the regular season and tanks in the playoffs as they loss Kelly to National duties.

Latest word is that McLeod has her visa, so the Freedom will finally have a worthy starting goalkeeper. That doesn't change my predictions but makes me more confident of the two home wins in May, plus it dramatically improves their odds of making the playoffs at the end.

Sol - Still Dominate and Breakers game revealed to be a fluke
Breakers - may Slip to Third tis month
Red Stars - Got the benefit of seeing Breakers without Smith... will they be that lucky again
FC Gold Pride - Could leap to 2 nd
Freedom - GK and D is the weakness.... but can they outscore opponents
Athletica - losing Daniela hurts, contending for the third pick next draft
Sky Blue - underacheiving - can Sawyers motivate them ?

I can see alot of ties this month with many teams only racking up a few points.... Breakers and Sol can distance themselves from the other teams.... FC will be either really good or the Tie bug will get them too

Actually somehow the Red Stars will play Boston when Smith is away with England in July. But Chicago will be without Carney also.

The Sol will win it all. The league wants the Sol vs Boston or DC for the final and Marta of course to shine....

Now...can this league get coverage on ESPN or even the NY Times?

Yeah, well, the old WUSA league probably wanted Mia to be in the first championship, but we finished tied for last. It doesn't always work out the way you expect, and LA hasn't been doing very well lately.

Just goes to show ya', anything can happen. The lowly Sky Blue convincingly trumped the Red Stars. That was some mighty good play from Sawyers' team yesterday. If they can keep that up, I can see them a spot or two up from their current position.

Sly Blue looked like the better team in the second half of the first game at Toyota - so yesterday isn't too shocking.

Parity has definitely arrived in WPS - I'd rank Boston/LA 1-2 this week with a pretty formless blob behind them.

I'd actually rank STL and FCSB in third and fourth.

I think for May, Sol will move down the standings a bit and the Breakers will take the top spot. Red Stars will still be at the top 3.

Freedom is at the bottom right now but will move to 4th by the end of the month... okay that was really wishful thinking. Maybe 6th, or 5th at the most. Abby will be out the next 2 games and McLeod just got here last week. I do predict Freedom to improve in defense. The whole team and coaching staff know this is what they need to work on and I'm sure that's what they did during the bye week. And Bompastor will continue to be awesome.

Sky Blue and Athletica will continue to improve, gaining confidence from this past weekend. Gold Pride hasn't been doing too well so the past few games will either wake them up or kill their confidence.
