Women's Professional Soccer

Okay, last week's question was about players who'd played against the Freedom and were now playing for the Freedom. The question this time is roughly the opposite: which players currently on a WPS roster other than the Freedom's have taken the field in Freedom's blue-and-white? (Some of the answers will surprise you!)

Again, I won't hazard a guess about the W-League days - But I honestly can't think of a single player from the WUSA days who are on another WPS roster. I used to confuse LeBlanc and Wright - it was Wright we had in 2003, correct? Otherwise, I got nothing. Trying to recall if we had some 'guest' players for the Unity Games but not remembering any.

Well one of the shockers is Angela Hucles(Breakers) from the 2004 WUSA traveling festival. And Christie Welch(Sol) played for W-league squad in 07, I think.

Wright was our backup goalkeeper in 2003, yes, and she's now our goalkeeper coach. And, no, there are no WUSA-era Freedom players now with other teams. Krista Davey Bobo tried out with Sky Blue but didn't make it.

I don't recall any guest players for the Unity Games, either, so all of the ones on my list are from elsewhere.

There are basically two categories: W-Leaguers who got away and surprises.

Hucles is indeed one of the surprises, playing for the Freedom in the June 19 WUSA Festival match against the Boston Breakers as one of the "guest" San Diego Spirit players, along with Shannon Macmillan, Julie Foudy, and Joy Fawcett. (Remember that after the 2003 season Hucles was traded away from Boston to San Diego in exchange for Aly Wagner - kind of ironic considering that Boston's coach at the time was Pia Sundhage.)

Christie Welsh played for the Freedom in 2007 and 2008 and is one of the W-Leaguers who got away. (There are three more that I know of.)

The remaining two surprises are actually among the best known players in national team history, and Ron should remember one of them because he participated in an extensive discussion over at BigSoccer about her appearance (singular - that's a hint!) with the team. The other one I didn't know about myself until just recently, when I was doing some research into Freedom history and came across a photo of her in Freedom road whites.

I'm lost - I remember no such discussion. I want to say I vaguely remember something about Akers, but do not remember the context or talking extensively about it. I'm not even sure who that is in the photo - is that Mitts?

That's Heather Mitts in the photo. The BigSoccer discussion is here (scroll down to the start of the relevant portion). Of course, it's from 2005, which may help explain why you don't remember it. ;)

I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday morning...

I do not recall the player in question at all playing for the Freedom (I'll leave the name out for those who want to figure it out), even though those sure look like comments I would make - but the funny thing is that I DO recall getting into it with the oversensitive idiot from the Freedom's opposition that day.

I think somebody's cheating. ;)

(I just sent out the quiz answer in the Freedom Fighters email newsletter, and Charlotte's a member.)

No cheating here - I haven't checked my email since this afternoon when you sent the one out about the reception before May 3rd game. That was all hands on research. I remembered a few from your blogs, but the hardest to find was Tiffany Weimer. Did I miss any?
Guess I should check my email to see if I got them all.

Okay, my apologies. I think you did get them all, at least it's the same list I came up with. Here's how I break it down:

At least seven players on other WPS teams have played for the Freedom. The obvious ones are the W-Leaguers who got away:

Tiffany Weimer (FC Gold Pride), 2006
Noelle Keselica (Sky Blue FC), 2006
Christie Welsh (Los Angeles Sol), 2007 and 2008
Ella Masar (Chicago Red Stars), 2008

But some of the other names might surprise you:
Angela Hucles (Boston Breakers) played for the Freedom in one of the WUSA Festivals in 2004
Heather Mitts (Boston Breakers) played for the Freedom in some of their exhibition matches in 2004
Brandi Chastain (FC Gold Pride) was a guest player for the Freedom for one match in 2005

Heck after reading that email I probably would have thought I had cheated too :)

For your third quiz I want to jump in early: Homare Sawa is second on the team (behind Abby) for shots with 8, although only two were on goal. Allie Long and Sonia Bompastor are tied for second for shots on goal (behind Abby) with 3, but only 5 shots each.

Wasn't sure which one you meant, shots or SOG, so I thought I would do both!

Christie Welsch. One of my favorite players for the Freedom (W-League) is now playing for LA Sol. Glad so many players former Freedom W-League players are still with the team.
