It is a rare opportunity to see the BEST soccer player in the world play in your backyard. Even if I wasn't a die hard Sol fan, I would STILL get season tickets just to see her play. Let's not forget the other stars of the team as well, Aly, Shannon, Stephanie, Han, Aya, Camille, and Karina. This team is going to be unstoppable!

Having Marta is pretty extraordinary :)
I want to know how much they paid her..tho..but this is basically becoming the best women's league in the world.

Having talent like Marta join the WPS just shows what the international community think of this league. It is going to be a great success and I can't wait until we get a team in Dallas so I can see all the teams play.

Great news! I already have season tickets, so I can't attend any more games - well, I guess I could drive to New Jersey when they play the Sol there, but that would be pushing it. Anyhow, this is definitely a big boost for the WPS.

I'm calling it right now....LA SOL - WPS Champions 2009. Who's with me?

2009 Chapmpions that sounds great, i think we need some good defensive players and we are set. I hope Aly Wagner can stay off the injuried list and th Boxx, Marta and Welsh combination is a good one. I heard Johanna Frisk (Marta's friend already sign with the team) is a good central defender but i haven't seen her play.

Talk about snubbing the USWNT, Their contract wont be anywhere near this (I suspect in the 50K total range and no perks)
These are from Jenn Strikers blog
http://womenssoccerusa.blogspot.com/
- 5 year guaranteed contract (Or 3 depending on the source)
- $225,000 salary guaranteed by AEG
- $225,000 from Puma
- 10% of gross Marta merchandise sales
- house
- SUV
- cell phone
- equity position in the league ( not sure what this means)
- team and individual performance bonuses

I don't think they snubbed anyone. WPS is its own entity. It does not belong to USSF or take orders from the USWNT. Individual owners can pay what they want to whoever they want. IMO, Marta is a smart investment in the league. IMO there hasn't been a single player with that kind of star/drawing power since Mia Hamm. If USWNT players want to make that kind of money then learn creativity, and quit playing robotic soccer and put yourself in a position for fans to want to come see you.
When Mia and the "gang" were playing, stadiums were sold out. Now the USWNT can barely draw 5-7,000 fans on a good night. I don't blame WPS teams for investing in "star foreign" players.
I am curious though if there will be jealousy and resentment from some of the USWNT players.
Was it a snub on the USMNT when MLS/LA Galaxy spent 250 million on David Beckham?

Well said. If the WPS is to be the best women's league in the world, you have to recruit the best players in the world, and that costs money. Unfortunately, sometimes its about who sells tickets and Marta does.
