Women's Professional Soccer

According to the events calender the International player draft will be this week. However their has not really been any news about which international players are interested in playing in theleague. Has anybody heard anything? What will be the draft order? I know Kelly Smith, Price, Daniela, Cristian and Marta all have contracts with thier current clubs. But I think Marta is only contracted through 2008>

In the WUSA, the coaches made abour 100K.... the average salary was just over 35K (if you include the founders)

Caoches salary has nothing to do with the players salary...

Except that you are better off coaching soccer than playing it.

It is reported that LA has offered Marta $350,000 per SEASON. So I don't think the salary cap is $540,000.

I apologize if I come across as completely ignorant of the facts on salaries. I was under the impression that each club within the WPS was an independently funded club. So, if AEG could afford to pay Marta $400k, then dog gone it, they would. LA would not have drafted Marta if they didn't think they could afford her. They have the funds and will pay the contract needed to get her.

Can someone please clairify this for me...

Thanks.

Ok, I knew the salarys wern't going to be huge, but those figures I've been seeing are disgusting!

$20,000? that's barely the minmun wage in the UK.

I thnk anything less than $40,000 is unnaceptble.

This is Womens PROFESSIONAL Soccer right?

Arsenal are semi-pro, they all have other jobs, most of them full-time.

I'm happy with the womens football (soccer) professional league is comming back.
I hope the WPS League Oranization, will go with the minimal salary cap for 1st few seasons (say 1 to 5 yrs), don't GO OVER BOARD, next thing we know, the WPS League will fould-up like WUSA.
It is to early, to discuss about the salary cap.
We don't know how successful, the WPS League in the 1st season will be.
Further more, how many sponsors can WPS get?
Some bigger companies don't even cares about the womens sports, if they do why don't they help WUSA back then? (especially NIKE).

Hopefully she is the exception... or else the entire league will have salaries that can't be contained.

How ticked will the US Gold medalist be if they are making less than 100K ? all this and a Gold medal, but they cant get paid the highest salaries in the league ?

A Gold Medal is really important, no doubt, to recognize top of the world team talent. Once we start seeing US players win the FIFA World PLayer of the Year Award, then there can be more battle cries for $350,00 salaries. Marta has won twice, two years running. She is the best female player in the world, and if other players are going to bemoan her salary, then time would be better spent to become an athlete of that caliber so that the salary demands are fair. I think the more players we get, gold medalists, FIFA award winners, etc., the more likely sponsors will back the league and salaries will be more fairly distributed. 'till then, I think it's great that Marta is being offered such money. I think it'll bring great and necessary attention to the league, which will in turn help it prosper.
Just my 2 pennies on the matter....

Freedom fans should be happy it looks like Lisa De Vanna is definitely in for next season. According to an Aussie paper she is finishing her commitment to the Swedish league this season. Playing the tail end of the W-League in Australia which ends in January, then coming to the US.

I would still be ticked off if as a UWNT player and gold (2X for several) couldn't a good wage for playing and being the draw of the league

Sure, all this and more couldn't get sponsors for the WUSA when the economy was good....

There are so many conflicting reports which leads me to believe that De Vanna really is coming to the US. Both times an Aussie paper has said she is coming a European paper or blog comes out saying that she isn't. Only time will tell who is telling the truth but I trust the Aussie papers reporting on their national player before I trust the European rumors. All do respect to Jen Striker but I think she is also wrong stating that 50% of the drafted internationals won't come. I am sure that some won't come but half is pretty high.

I think 50% is too low some will come but there are several who felt burned by the WUSA shutdown. They will want more maney that most teams can afford and judging from the Marta demands many will ask for as much as they feel they can get...

the payroll for Foreign players could be the thorn in the side for this league. i can't see a team trying to sign players that will cost so much, not just in terms of salaries, then you also have to look at transportation so they can play in NT friendlies and time lost to those friendlies. In 2003 many NT players missed several WUSA games that could have cost their teams.
