Women's Professional Soccer

According to the events calender the International player draft will be this week. However their has not really been any news about which international players are interested in playing in theleague. Has anybody heard anything? What will be the draft order? I know Kelly Smith, Price, Daniela, Cristian and Marta all have contracts with thier current clubs. But I think Marta is only contracted through 2008>

even so, you are still talking about HUGE salaries with very little intake. I cannot see any sponsor spending enough money on the league

Here are the WNBA figures on Salaries (Min and MAX only) just to give you an idea
Minimum
Years of Service 2008 2009
0- 2 $34,500 $35,190
(b) For all other Player Contracts, the Maximum Player Salary shall be:
2008 2009 2010
$95,000 $97,000 $99,000

Sorry found the the WPS salary cap, - sorry - Marta is not coming

WPS player salary cap

The seven teams - there also are franchises in the Bay area, Chicago, Boston, Washington, St Louis and New York - are keeping a closer eye on finances this time.
The salary cap is about $540,000 per team.

It also seems like they have the option to dropp one player from the sarary cap

If I remember correctly when the WNBA started the max salaries were $100,000 which was for the founders- Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes and Rebecca Lobo. With endorsements that brought them up to about $1M. Most of the average players were only making about $10,000 per year. It certainly wasn't enough to live on. The ABL was paying a lot more money so it was able to keep all the other national team players for the few years it lasted. However, everyone has seen that the women's leagues can't survive with the huge player salaries right away. The league needs time to build up support from the fans and from the sponsors. It took the WNBA 10 years to finally be able to pay players at least a survivable income. Time will tell and I hope that the WPS has taken lessons from the WUSA and ABL and can avoid the mistakes those leagues made. I want nothing more than to see this league work.

Well if that number is true which I don't think it is then the average salary will be 21,000 per player. None of the European players, the Brazilians, or the Japanese players will come then. The league will be the W-league with the national team members playing with them. I saw that posted on a soccer blog a week ago I doubt that it is true. Granted I think my source was a little bit high but I seriously doubt that the WPS is not going to at least give the players a living wage for playing. You seriously expect the league would pay their players so low a wage that they would be forced to live in low income housing. The national players never would have agreed to it. Completely unrealistic. That would make the entire international draft a huge sham.

Ok, I knew the salarys wern't going to be huge, but those figures I've been seeing are disgusting!

$20,000? that's barely the minmun wage in the UK.

I thnk anything less than $40,000 is unnaceptble.

This is Womens PROFESSIONAL Soccer right?

Arsenal are semi-pro, they all have other jobs, most of them full-time.

I apologize if I come across as completely ignorant of the facts on salaries. I was under the impression that each club within the WPS was an independently funded club. So, if AEG could afford to pay Marta $400k, then dog gone it, they would. LA would not have drafted Marta if they didn't think they could afford her. They have the funds and will pay the contract needed to get her.

Can someone please clairify this for me...

Thanks.

I think given the state of the economic crisis that all the salary offers except the ones down the bottom will be scaled back. Instead of the $2.5 million salary cap which was reported a few weeks ago it will probably be scaled back to $1.5 range instead. I still don't think it will be scaled all the way down to $540,000 as was previously posted because the league would have absolutely no credibility after stating their intentions in the international draft. The WPS would be the laughing stock of the soccer universe which is exactly what they wouldn't want to happen.

As for Marta, I don't think she will see the $400,000 it was reported she was seeking from anybody. I think it will be closer to the amount that Schein got from Lyon, probably a little bit higher to make her the best paid female player. I think at that level there will be a lot more competiton for her services meaning that LA may not be able to get her out of Europe.

I'm keeping faith and confidence that Marta will come to the WPS. Sure, it's a risk given the economic crisis right now, but she's been with Umea for 5 years AND it's Los Angeles. From what I've been reading, it sounds like she's ready for the next step in her career. I think she "only" makes about $165,000 with Umea, plus Puma endorsements. Even if LA gives her $250,000-$300,000, she will make more money with endorsements in WPS AND it's Los Angeles. I'm gonna keep my hopes up she will come.... I hope I'm right.... Marta mentioned on her official website that she will discuss her future plans once the UEFA women's cup is complete.

I did some digging in that blog she states that the coaches are making anywhere between $70,000 to just over $100,000. If those numbers are true then I think that the player's salary cap will be higher than $540,000. I can't remember ever hearing a coach making 1/5 of their entire squad's salary. It maybe true but that would be a pretty poor move. You are correct on the national team members I didn't remember that until after I had posted.
