According to the events calender the International player draft will be this week. However their has not really been any news about which international players are interested in playing in theleague. Has anybody heard anything? What will be the draft order? I know Kelly Smith, Price, Daniela, Cristian and Marta all have contracts with thier current clubs. But I think Marta is only contracted through 2008>

Great question. I'm excited to see how this week unfolds. I've done a lot of research on my favorite player, Marta, and based on what I've read, mostly from the WPS website, is that Marta is in fact interested in playing with WPS next year. From what I understand, she had the option to sign with Sweden for an extended contract, but only signed through 2008, making her available for negotiations and to play for WPS. I've read that before signing with Sweden, Marta actually wanted to play for WUSA but that folded. So, the interest is there in playing in the States. My guess is that we're going to have to come up with some good cash and security if she is to leave Sweden, where she has helped the league achieve record attendance records and win numerous chanpionships. But seeing what I've seen of Marta, I can imagine she'd be excited to be a pioneer in getting this league off the ground with all of our other USNT profoundly talented players. I know I'm on hyper email alert to see what unfolds this week...

Thanks for getting this discussion giong, Leyla. I'll be interested to see what conversations unfold on this topic!

Yeah, I'm also on high alert on which international players want to play in the league. I do know that LA Galaxy owner AEG is interested in her and want to tie her in to one of thier soccer teams. I got this info from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marta_Vieira_da_Silva

AEG is owner of the WPS LA team as well, so hopefully we can get her over here. Being from LA I would love to see her play for the LA team. I also heard from Marta official website that Cristiane is no longer with her Sweedish club team but sign with a semi pro womens team in Brazil, The Corinthians. Marta does not think Cristiane will stay in Brazil long for she said, "Alot of clubs want her."

Daniela has signed with her Sweedish club team through 2009, so maybe we can see her later on in the year.

Im not sure how long is Kelly Smith contract or Prince. I just wish you know more on which players were interested. Hopefully by the end of the week we will know more.

What is also interested to see if any old US National Team veterans will like to play. I know Julie Foudy and Mia Hamm said they are not interested but I do think the ones interested are:

Brandi Chastian
Tiffany Milbret
Briana Scurry (she was not allocated which is interesting)

I wonder if other players are interested like Daniel Fotopolous, Christie Welsh, Cindy Parlow and even assistant UCLA coach Shannon McMillan.

The other good thing is that AEG is a wealthy company so they have the money to get her over here. I just would not like to see them manage the WPS team like they manage the LA Galaxy.

Great response. I appreciate people who can about women's soccer and the players without making stuff up and blurring facts from the real news. That's really important to me, 'cause it's so easy to get stuff stirred up without having any basis for the chat. I've spent more than enough evenings scoping out blogs and stuff to see how this happens, which can be frustrating when ya just want to know what the real deal is.

Anyhow, I'm seriously working on expanding my knowledge of other international players. I'm so into Marta that I often lose sight of the fact that there are many, many brilliant women players all over the world. From the moment I saw Marta play during last year's world cup, I was hooked. I just love the Brazilian style of ball play, and she is just mesmerizing to watch.

Not surprisingly, I do really like to watch Cristian as well. She's another amazingly talented player. I'm happy that she signed with the Corinthians, because Brazil needs to have its own premier league for women considering the crazy talent that comes out of the country. I think having Cristian there may make some waves in time. We'll see, or she may quickly out grow the league and head for other shores, maybe the US. I'd love to see her here. I'm also paying more attention to the Japanese women players. They've developed so much in the last few years. To contend for an Olympic medal was amazing considering they weren't really on the radar screen prior to these Olympics.

From what I've read, I'll see if I can find you the link, Birgit Prinz is contracted to her current club through 2011, I believe. I'd love to see Nadine Angerer here, don't know her status. I'll see what 4-1-1 I can come up with this week.

A final note on Marta for now, I do think WPS will get her. She is rumored to be asking for $400,000 and some other luxuries to be signed with the league, which is notta considering what top male players get paid. the link to a Swedish soccer blog that quotes some legit resources on the mattter: http://dandal.webblogg.se/2008/september/linkoping-offers-cristiane...'s

we'll see. I think meeting Marta's demands is going to be tough for a start up league, as I know that WUSA didn't go into their business plan with good strategy, 'causing the league to fold. My guess is that they're gonna wanna be more cautious about overspending this time around. But if LA can afford to fund Marta, it'd be great for the league. Sorry for the comparison, but Beckham did a lot to bring attention to MLS. Top international talent COMBINED with top US talent, which we have, no doubt, will mean a lot to people who know soccer. It may not mean much to some circles who can only root for the suburban homegrown players.

On that note, I'd love to see the stadiums across the country filled with all sorts of people, not just the younger suburban crowd that soccer naturally attracts. We need support from MLS fans and immigrant families and old and young and all things in between to get this league to thrive. I think it's time and I'm confident it will make it.

Thanks for the great conversation.

MARTA DA SILVA WILL PLAY IN THE WPS LEAGUE IN 2009. SHE IS SIGNED THROUGH 2008 AT UMEA AND WANTS TO EXPLORE OTHER OPTIONS IN HER CAREER. SHE WOULD LIKE TO PLAY IN BRASIL WITH A PRO LEAGUE BUT THE COUNTRY DOESN'T CARE. I WOULD PAY TO SEE HER PLAY BEFORE I WOULD SEE ANY OTHER PLAYER IN THE WORLD- MAN OR WOMAN. SHE IS PELE IN A SKIRT. TIMOTEO IN DENVER

Hey Marta fan,

Can you possibly explain to me what's going on? If the WPS did not think they had any chances of scoring members of the Brazilian team, would they really have
used their draft picks to choose them? I would imagine there has been a lot of under the table talks and negotiations internationally in general. When are the other seasons internationally played? Is it possible that Cristiane could still play for Corinthians and Marta could still play for Umea, if the seasons were at different times? All I know, is it's all very exciting, and if the WPS could get basically, the entire Brazilian team, I might lose my mind at the idea to see all of them live!!

Hey Yolanda

Well usually according to FIFA rules yes a player can be under contract with lets say the WPS and still play with another team in Sweden or whatever. However, lets say the Los Angeles WPS team signs Marta for 5 years and she still wishes to play for Umea she can do that but it was to be an option in her WPS contract. Many players do this throughout all over the world, they call it, "Being on loan." Landon Danovan was on loan from Germany to the MLS for a couple of seasons.

I'm not sure when the Corinthians seasons begins or ends. Umea season starts in April and ends in mid Oct. Which is during the same time frame when the WPS starts. I only see Marta playing for one club. I think whichever team gets Marta which may be Los Angeles they would not risk her playing for another club and getting hurt.

I do think "SOME" clubs can afford Marta and Cristiane. I don't know what is the salary cap for the teams but they may have a rule like the MLS clubs have that lets you try to sign players that make you go over the cap, like the Galaxy did with Beckham or the Fire did with Blanco. The LA team can afford Marta since they are owned by AEG.

Anyways we can all agree this is very exciting, I can't wait for the season to start.
